Accounting systems.
We have been using a proprietary accounting system for some years. There are a couple of problems with it as it stands. It is not web enabled and so you can only use it if you are on the machine where it is installed unless you go through a backup and restore on a demo machine, it is not an enterprise accounting system (it doesn't deal with multi-company or multi-currency transactions), it isn't database independant and, finally, we have never bothered to integrate it to our order processing system.
Our ERP system has accounting functionality which is rapidly evolving and we hope to use it someday but I take the view that this is something I want tried, trusted and stable and so have been looking for an alternative to use in the meantime that will resolve all our outstanding problems (or most of them). I've been looking at SQL-Ledger for a while although a difficult experience with it in about 2002 meant it dropped off my radar for a while. I've recently picked it up again and remain very impressed with what has been done with it.
It took all of two hours to get up, running and populated (admittedly we currently have a small data set) and so far it's running well. The next stage will be to integrate it fully with Ofbiz which should be interesting. Ofbiz is a good example of an SOA and I'm hoping to use this to our advantage.
This post was delayed due to busy-ness in my private life. The product is now up, live and stable and we may look at integration in the next while. At the moment keeping the records between the systems is ok as we don't have too many transactions. The system we have is highly scaleable apart from this little detail and I'm keen to fix this before starting my new job.
